Saatchi Gallery, County Hall
For the Saatchi Gallery's move from a north London former paint factory to County Hall's Grade II listed Edwardian interiors, we have combined delicate renovation with the creation of flexible naturally-lit exhibition spaces. The expansive first floor rooms of what was once the home of London's regional government have an interesting timeless quality not usually encountered in modern galleries.
We were selected as in-house architect for County Hall after winning a competition in 1993. Japanese company Shirayama Shokusan, which bought the property after the abolition of the GLC in 1986, wanted to develop the riverfront site as a family leisure and cultural centre. Since then, we have designed the installation of two hotels, the London Aquarium, Dali Universe, ticketing and lounge facilities for the London Eye, and a number of restaurants.
