Northern Stage
The 1970s former Newcastle Playhouse has been completely transformed by Arts Team. It is now the permanent home of theatre company Northern Stage, which has an international reputation for physical theatre and a comittment to participatory work. And it is now a European centre for the performing arts.
In deference to the design of the original building (by Sir William Whitfield), the heavy brickwork remains on the exterior. However, we wanted to push the idea a bit further, so used the theatrical idea of suspension of disbelief and had it appear to float above the sheer glass façade of the lower foyer.
