University of Qatar
The Emir of Qatar issued a decree in 1973 proclaiming the establishment of the College of Education; 57 male and 93 female students were admitted in that first year. In later years, the country's rapid development made it necessary for the college to be expanded to accommodate new areas of specialisation.
As a result, the University of Qatar was founded in 1977 with four colleges. Two further colleges were established by 1985. At present, the university comprises six colleges: the College of Education, the College of Arts and Sciences, the College of Shariaa and Islamic Studies, the College of Engineering, the College of Law and the College of Business and Economics.
We were commissioned in 1975 as executive architects within the Ove Arup & Partners team of consulting engineers. The unique and original conceptual design was produced and developed by the Egyptian Architect Dr. Kamal El Kafrawi.
The university is sited on 250 hectares of previously unused land in the city of Doha. It provides education, recreation and accommodation buildings and facilities for 6,000 students.
